Set against the background of London's dockland, Malcom Beath and his best friend, Jimmy Banks, spend their teenage years stealing cars and motor-bikes, shagging local girls and trading in stolen car-parts. Their success causes them to 'go legit' and start a legal retail spare parts company. Their company prospers and all goes well until a rival company, Duncan King Ltd., arrives on the scene. Not willing to accept any competition, Beath exploits a thug he met in the army. They start a campaign of dirty tricks to get rid of 'the opposition. ' These become progressively murkier: from threats and sabotage to murder. However, even this doesn't stop Duncan King Ltd. from cramping Malcolm Beath's desire to be Number One in the trade. The novel finally erupts in a sudden and unexpected violent finale.
