'Deryn Lake’s meticulous research and her poignant sense of passing time elevate the book above mere pleasure reading. She is my favourite historical novelist.' — Steven Saylor, author of The Throne of Caesar

'The world The Young Pretender inhabits is brought vividly to life.' - Historical Novel Society

In this titillating but tender novel, based on eyebrow-raising letters found in the Royal Archives, comes the story of a man of Scottish legend. Charles Edward Stuart was the Bonnie Prince from overseas, risking all to fulfil his people’s destiny, while enjoying love affairs with some of the most fascinating women of the age.

For while Charles was undoubtedly dedicated to the Jacobite cause, he was also devoted to the pursuit of women. Whether they were married or single, older or younger, mattered not to Charles as he cavorted his way across Europe with the same gusto he applied to fighting for the English and Scottish crowns.

But perhaps his greatest love was reserved not for any sweetheart, but for his daughter. Torn from his arms as a child, Charlotte grew up an outcast and lived in scandal as a result.

The Prince’s Women is a uniquely human portrait of a celebrated man. Fans of The Favourite and Phillipa Greggory will devour this comprehensively researched, right royal romp.

'Deryn Lake combines a light and witty touch with historical authenticity ' — Danuta Kot, author of Life Ruins

Deryn Lake started to write stories at the age of five, then graduated to novels but destroyed all her early work because, she says, it was hopeless. A chance meeting with one of the Getty family took her to Sutton Place and her first serious novel was born. Deryn was married to a journalist and writer, the late L. F. Lampitt, has two grown-up children, four beautiful and talented grandchildren, and one rather large cat. Deryn has lived near the famous battlefield of 1066 for the past 16 years where she enjoys her life as a woman about town. She is also the author of Fortune’s Soldier, Sutton Place, To Sleep No More, The King’s Women and Pour The Dark Wine.
