La La Land meets One Day in this surreal and haunting romance, about cinema, jazz, coffee, sex, and lost love.
Joel Black is the guy you see sitting alone in the coffee shop, staring vaguely out the window. He loves old movies, has a job playing the piano down at the local grill, a poster of Audrey Hepburn on his wall, Duke Ellington on the record player, and a melancholic look about him that says he lost someone.
Women are drawn to him, luring him with erotic tales, but Joel is detached, as though he belongs in another world. Yet here he is in this one, waiting for something to happen. And slowly, as Joel's story unfolds, we learn what brought him to Washington DC, and just how hopelessly romantic he really is...
Douglas Lindsay is the author of over twenty novels, including A ROOM WITH NO NATURAL LIGHT, BEING FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR KITE! and LOST IN JUAREZ, as well as the DS HUTTON, DCI JERICHO and DI WESTPHALL crime series. He also wrote the BARNEY THOMSON novels, the first of which, THE LONG MIDNIGHT OF BARNEY THOMSON, was released as a motion picture in 2015, starring Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson and Ray Winstone.
He lives in Somerset, England.
