Adelaide had lost her mother at ten years of age, of influenza. She had beautiful memories of her. Soon after, Adelaide’s father had remarried, thinking to give his daughter a loving female presence. He couldn’t have made a worse choice.
Adelaide’s stepmother was harsh and demanding, and his daughter was a servant in her own home. Now, at 19 years of age, Adelaide could no longer take it!! Desperate, she answered an advertisement from the Matrimonial Times.

But when tragedy struck on the train platform in Silver City, Adelaide knew she couldn’t go back.
Melvin had taken over his father’s successful Dry Goods store in New York city and was doing well. But then, he heard of Silver City’s Gold Rush, and like so many others, he caught “Gold Rush Fever”, sold everything and rushed out west to stake his claim.
Now Melvin was wondering if it had been a good idea. It wasn’t easy finding a claim that was any good, and if a man did, there was a good chance they would get run off, or even killed, for it. So, when he was offered a chance to purchase an existing profitable claim, he jumped at the opportunity.
When Adelaide met Melvin, she was taken with how much of a gentleman he was.
