Her eyes traced the elegant loops of Hope’s handwriting as she read about Hope’s motherhood joys and the warmth of a loving marriage.
Her wistful smile vanished as soon as it appeared. That was a fantasy for her. She was here in Detroit, in Mrs. Jenkins’ alehouse, and that was her reality.
Until Mrs. Jenkins sold the alehouse. Reva’s reality was about to become much, much worse!

It wasn’t the first time it was happening, and he was getting tired of it. He needed to settle down, and fast, so ‘wolves’ could stop trying to take advantage of him through his marital status.
The search for a suitable partner continued. Joel’s criteria were unyielding. He wanted a woman of sophistication, education, and grace—qualities that seemed elusive in the rough west.
Thoughtfully, Joel began composing his advert.
