June: She had always dreamed of being one of New York’s wealthy women, riding in lovely carriages, with their beautiful gowns and glamorous hats. It was not to be, she was of the working class, and she had no dowry. So realistically, she may not marry at all.
Audra, her mother’s dressmaking client had said to her: “Use your beauty to get what you want.”
As she rode home in the borrowed carriage, Audra’s words started making more sense to her. Ida, her sister had taken matters into her own hands and answered an “Mail Order Bride” advert. If her sister could do that – create a life she wanted – why couldn’t she? She could get married too. She could marry into wealth, and have the glamorous life she’d always dreamed of.
June’s smile grew, and she had a sudden urge to giggle. How had she never thought of this?
Wilder: His father had built one of the largest and most profitable Inn and Saloons in the area, as well as a large ranch just outside of town. And now he was ready to hand over the operations to his son……but with conditions…..big ones.
Wilder had lived life as he chose, which was a bit “immoral” in his father’s eyes.
But marriage??? Marriage was the last thing on his mind, but now here he was, faced with an impossible choice. Get married now, or risk losing everything.
After much thought he had figured that he had found a solution. A “Mail Order Bride”. Someone who didn’t know him or his past, and didn’t mean a thing to him. He would satisfy his father’s demands and get what he wanted. All with no long-term commitment.
Two people, each with a motive for marriage, and love was not it.
