High King
(2014)(Echoes of Ancient Dreams)
(The second book in the High Warriors of Rohan series)A novel by Kathryn Le Veque
She's down in the dumps and rightfully so...over a broken engagement. She was jilted...and at the altar no less! And now she's in Ireland spending what should've been her honeymoon with her best friend. Trying to heal...trying to forget and move on. Destry Caldbeck is everything a man should want. She's stunningly drop dead gorgeous (a former Cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers) with an unassuming, humble personality to match. She's an RN that volunteers her time to third world countries when she's not working at the hospital of which she's employed. In a nutshell, she's out of just about any guys league. So why was she jilted?!?
At 6'6" and 270 lbs., and built like a linebacker, Dr. Conor Daderga is absolutely enormous with his chiseled good looks and brilliant smile. He sports a red goatee and is loud and passionate with his piercing blue eyes. He's a Celtic and Irish History Professor with a doctorate in Anthropology. He's good at what he is/does...intelligent and dedicated. But he's just seen an angel and nothing else matters. That glorious unsettling (but marvelous) strong pull of attraction was happening to Conor Daderga. He couldn't take his eyes off of his destiny...Destry Caldbeck.
I love this Author! She has an uncanny talent of leading the reader into the fear and desperation the two main characters are experiencing. They've traveled back in time and the realization of their predicament is made astoundingly clear. The apprehension and disorientation of the reality that they face is clearly felt. The mixture of fear and disbelief as they try to logically explain away events is mingled with suspicion and the overwhelming confusion and horror they're faced with. And eventually coming to accept the fantastic truth, without panicking. And even though the two main characters cannot logically explain it, they don't question the "rightness" of it or how it happened. They KNOW they're both where they're meant to be...where they once used to be. They're home!
I thought this was a good story and even though I went into this plot knowing it was a novella, it still felt incomplete when I read the final line. So much time was spent in the build-up...the coming together of the two main characters, that the finish came too fast and kind of fell flat (for me). I hate to say I felt disappointed as I love this author. Nevertheless, I feel like the ending was abrupt and incomplete.
Great character description and consuming, detailed narrative. As usual, great captivating dialogue with strong emotional dimension.
Genre: Historical Romance
