Even though the Perkins gang had been gone for years, the town knew he would return. He had left something precious behind…his fourteen-year-old daughter.
The town had been rebuilt, attempting to restore hope, but with an ever-present dark cloud of dread hanging over them.
They needed help…someone to protect them…

Loraine’s father had left her behind when he took his gang to what he called ‘Greener Pastures’. For weeks she waited for his return, not showing her face in town where the people hated her family. But with no more food and no way to take care of herself, the fourteen-year-old girl showed up on the preacher’s doorstep, desperate, dirty, and half starved. He and his wife took her in, but Loraine was shunned by most, hated by some, and feared by all.
Four years later, although treated kindly by most, Loraine knew they all wished she would leave their town, taking the threat of her father’s return with her.
In a desperate attempt to find some normalcy and deserved happiness for this sweet girl, the preacher decides she needs a husband. Not one man within a hundred miles would be interested in her for a wife.
