The author of this book has taken a wide cross-section of women from varied backgrounds and at all stages of the life-cycle to find out about their experiences and feelings. Looking at what they say in the light of feminist analyses and the psychological and psychoanalytic literature on female sexuality, she finds that, 30 years after the "sexual revolution", women's sexuality is still suppressed. In her quest to explain why, she explores the issues of faking, celibacy and self-effacement, what girls are taught to think of as sexuality, the waxing and waning of desire, how teenagers conduct their sex lives and symbolism and fantasy.
