In my book 'Ecstasy' of 1961 I believe I succeeded in showing that so-called religious experiences are basically identical in kind with experiences known to people who would not interpret them in religious contexts. As an unbeliever, I became increasingly interested in what seemed to me to be some of the effects of such experiences and, even more, of similar but lesser experiences, in the contexts of everyday life; and especially, in everyday life's more trivial contexts. This book is an attempt to show what some of these may be.
