Noel M. Loomis was born in Oklahoma Territory and grew up in the southwest that later figured prominently in his fiction. He began contributing fiction to the magazine market in the late 1930s, and came to prominence with his first novel, Rim of the Caprock, in 1952. The nine stories collected here demonstrate his versatility, his broad range of interests, and his emphasis on historical accuracy and detail. Loomis was a truly fine storyteller whose fiction, as Bill Pronzini observes, has "a lean, reportorial quality that provides intense realism without crossing the line into sensationalism".
