Alan Monaghan

(b.1970)

Alan Monaghan was born in Dublin. After leaving school he served an apprenticeship at the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

Alan started writing at an early age. In 1995 he was shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing award for the short story Rosary. In 2003 he was once again shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award for The Soldiers Song, which went on to win both the Emerging Fiction Prize and the overall New Irish Writing Award.

In 2010, his first novel The Soldiers Song (which was loosely based on the short story) was published by Pan Macmillan. The Soldiers Song was widely acclaimed and reached the top ten in the Irish Bestseller charts. This was quickly followed by The Soldiers Return (2011) and The Soldiers Farewell (2012). These three books comprise a historical trilogy that encompasses the First World War, the Irish War of Independence, and the Irish Civil War.

Alan is currently working on his next novel, which is set during the Spanish Civil War.
