Broken Promises
Mary Hochstetler and Isaac Studer sit on a fallen log hidden inside a stand of trees and pledge their love to each other. Isaac must leave Hollybrook to live with his cousin in another state during his rumspringa, but he promises to return and marry her. Isaac leaves, but after seven letters, he goes silent. Mary waits and waits. Three years of silence go by, but she still harbors hope that he will return to her as he promised.
Mark Schrock has pined for Mary for as long as he's known her. After painstakingly pursuing her, he convinces her to give up on Isaac and to court him instead. Mary finally agrees, and they end up marrying. Mary struggles to love Mark the way she loved Isaac. The challenge proves to be greater than she ever dreamed. And just when she feels that it might happen, the unthinkable occurs: Isaac Studer returns to Hollybrook expecting to claim his bride.
The Loss
Mary Schrock's marriage is struggling, but she and her husband are making progress. She's with child, and her pregnancy is helping bring them together. Mary's former beau is finally out of the picture. For the most part.
But when tragedy strikes and Mary flees Hollybrook in grief, it's not her husband who follows her. It's her former beau, the man she's loved since childhood. Desperate to be free of her past, Mary decides to reveal all to her husband. Will he forgive her? Or is she too late?
The Restoration
Mary Schrock has returned to her husband. All she wants now is a second chance, a new beginning. At first, she thinks it's possible. Mark seems open and willing to try again.
Mary finally feels free of her former beau. In fact, she hasn't seen him since returning to her Amish community. So, she is completely unprepared for her husband's confession regarding him. How could Mark have done such a thing? And won't her husband ever trust her?
A tragic accident seriously injures Mark. Once over the shock, Mary believes that this is her chance to become close to Mark again. He's going to need her in ways he's never needed her before, and she welcomes the chance to serve him, but he'll have none of it. He rejects her help and scorns her efforts.
Mary is devastated. And she knows that neither of them have been honest with one another. But won't brutal honesty damage them even further? Can Mary possibly muster the courage to reveal everything?
Join Mary and Mark as they embark on a journey fraught with obstacles, as they make their way back to each other. Scrapple with them as they discover what true love and true romance really are.
