Moving On

(1993)
A Story by

It's a near-future America where scientists have discovered how to talk to ghosts, and the US Justice Department can now gather testimony from the ghosts of murder victims. John Klinger, lone technician at a desert listening station, spends his days (and nights) recording the testimony of the ghosts assigned to him. He soon commits his own crime: He falls in love with one of them. Her name is Emily - and there are men in the big city miles away who want her testimony...and are willing to do anything to get it.

After two decades of encouragement from fans of the short story, in 2016 Bruce and his son Ben made a short-film adaptation, which won a number of festival awards.

This ebook contains not only the original short story, but also the film script, pitch for the film, pitch for the proposed TV series, and bios of the filmmakers, as well as links to ebook editions of some of Bruce's other fiction.

Praise for Bruce McAllister's Fiction

"Bruce McAllister is one of the least known and greatest talents working in the science fiction field today."

- Isaac Asimov Presents the Great SF Stories

"Among top short story talents in the field, McAllister is a leader. Polished, moving, thought-provoking - this collection is without parallel."

- Harry Harrison, Science Fiction Grand Master

"Bruce McAllister is that rarity, a writer who can do anything. His stories range from the sweet to the terrifying, idea-dense to atmospheric, character-rich to event-packed. And sometimes all of this in the same story. Writers read other writers to learn tricks, but I often cannot see how he does it. He's a magician."

- Gregory Benford
