Sam Gibson was twisted with guilt, ever since that fateful day back in Twin Forks when he was the town deputy marshal and had tried to intervene in a shooting. The trouble was he had been drinking and one of his errant shots resulted in the death of a youngster. He became a pariah, turned in his badge and hit the Redemption Trail.
But fate hadn’t finished with him, and when he drifted into Cooksville he found himself yet again embroiled in gunplay, when yet more innocent lives were lost. The next thing he knew he was in the town jail being treated by the town doctor for a headshot wound. He was dazed and confused and barely understood that a trial had found him guilty of murder. As he recovered he realized that the hammering pain in his head was mirrored by the hammering outside—as a gallows was being built for him.
Someone was not convinced of his guilt and he escaped to hit the trail again. Only then did he realize that justice and the law did not run hand in hand, and for him to gain redemption he would have to risk his life several more times to save not only himself but the very souls of two towns.
