Fiona McFarlane recommends
The Echoes (2024)
Evie Wyld
"The Echoes is a gorgeous, wise, furious meditation on the ways in which we carry both love and pain across decades and hemispheres. Each new layer is a revelation of compassion and understanding. Wyld is brilliant on girlhood, on grief, on intimacy's terrible costs and its funny, messy grace. This is a jewel of a novel."
Inside the Wolf (2023)
Amy Rowland
"At once elegiac and hopeful, Inside the Wolf is a raw, moving meditation on the dangerous myths we make as families and communities. A wise book, exquisitely written."
The Railwayman's Wife (2014)
Ashley Hay
"The Railwayman's Wife is a beautifully attentive study of what comes after - after a funeral, after a war - and Ashley Hay is a wise and gracious guide through this fascinating territory. This is a book in which grief and love are so entwined they make a new and wonderful kind of sense."
