It was 1869. Anna Martin of Philadelphia was recovering from the shock and grief caused by her parents' deaths by accompanying her brother on a business trip to Paris. There she met a young engineer who was about to leave for Cairo to work on the Suez Canal and participate in the festivities attendant on its opening. After a whirlwind courtship, he persuaded Anna to stay in Europe to await his return. But in the house on the Seine where she took up residence, there were such tremors and strange apparitions that Anna began to wonder if her fondness had not led her into a dangerous folly
