Funnier than Bridget Jones's Diary, more bizarre than Fleabag, Anna Duke's clumsy attempts to re-join the couples club after the Arsehole ‒ sorry, her husband Alfie ‒ has left her, result in various embarrassing events, and lead her to some strange places and into some weird situations.
She speculates that prior information about a man she's going to meet might affect the success or otherwise of the date, in the same way that a medicinal placebo can affect physical symptoms. Do expectations affect outcomes in the dating game? Anna's theory doesnt always work out in practice and many wires get crossed.
Is it possible that one person will have the courage to manfully hack through the thorny thicket of Anna's mind, circumventing the muddled hopes, dreams, fears, musings and speculations, to reach the perfect ending?
This is a rom-com with a difference; though funny and romantic, it's also sharp and observational, exploring all sorts of subjects from angles you may never have considered.
The Unreliable Placebo is the ideal book club novel, posing endless questions about modern life and a woman's place in the world.
. I have not laughed so much reading a book for a long time it was a wonderful - and wonderfully funny - picture of modern womanhood. Val Kershaw, award-winning author.
I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Unreliable Placebo' The novel has that precious, oh-so-rare quality of being unputdownable: a likeable, wittily acerbic but soft-hearted heroine in Anna, sparkling and frequently laugh-out-loud dialogue, wry observations, amusing but interesting secondary characters and relatable situations. All in all, top notch entertainment - well done! Steve Ellis
Genre: Romance
