Set in the extravagant bustle of late seventeenth-century Paris, this is the grisly story of Catherine Mont-voison, one of the most infamous murderesses of all time and queen of the capital's 400 witches. At the age of eighteen she gained fame by practising palmistry and concocting love-potions, but spurred on by jealousy and snubs from the royal court, she went on to become an inexhaustible abortionist, poisoner, devil-worshipper and killer of unwanted babies whom she buried in her garden. This is indeed a gruesome tale of aristocratic vice and evil.
