Georgina Montcalm's life is in ruins. Her father and brother dead, she has slaved to save her family estate, which is entailed to an unknown American cousin, while waiting for Sir Trevor Longchamps to return from the Peninsula so they can be married. When he does return, though, it is to tell a haggard and exhausted Georgina that he has fallen in love with another. While riding away her megrims, Georgina accidentally rescues two young sprigs of the Ton from a highwayman in a strange red fog. One of them immediately falls in love with what he calls his Fair Amazon.

Hearing of young Longchamps' outrageous behavior, Georgina's godmother brings her to London, determined to find her a good match. Rested and restored to health, Georgina becomes a Toast of the Ton, known to all as the Fair Amazon. Trevor's new love is not welcomed by his family, as Trevor begins to realize, but by that time Georgina is besieged by everyone who matters, including the lately arrived American cousin. A continuing maelstrom of misunderstands and cross-purposes almost results in scandal and broken hearts, but justice is served and true love eventually triumphs.
