(2008)
A novel by

Maximilian Moeran is an American Senator who's running for President, he's also a murderer, a womaniser and an ex-football-star. Max runs his political life without scruples - until he has a sexual affair with Esme, a young schoolgirl, and this is the only thing which troubles his conscience. One night, left alone on the fifty-yard line of a football stadium, Maximilian meets The Eyes and he changes. Suspected by family and friends of having had a nervous breakdown, Max becomes the thing he always appeared to be - an honest man. However, most people preferred the old Max and shun the new onw. When Esme returns years later, seeking redress for the innocence he took from her, Maximilian has to make the ultimate decision - the old life or the new enlightenment. Childeyes is more than a beautifully crafted political parody, the novel also asks some big questions about our concepts of good and bad - and guilt. Set in the world of Washington DC insiders, a world with as much charisma and sex-appeal as Hollywood, Childeyes examines life at its most fundamental. The Lolitaesque affair between Max and Esme is controversial and taboo-breaking, but treated with sensitivity and without hysteria.
