I read, I thought, all John Masters Savage series of novels decades ago, and loved them. Many of my Book Club members were interested to learn about India in Teatime for the Firefly recently, so I decided one of his books would be a good selection for my meeting. Researching him on line, I discovered Far, Far the Mountain Peak, and realized I hadnt read it before. This novel covers Savage family in the first 40 years or so of the twentieth century. I enjoyed it very much: his writing is excellent, the story and character development complex and interesting. Like Ian McEwan, another writer whom I admire very much, Masters paints critical episodes in complete detail, then connects them with brief segments covering less significant intervening time. This enables him to spread a very wide and panoramic canvas of the period and the history in which he has set his characters. Highly recommended.
