A Retro John Keegan Mystery
It's 1999 and NYPD Homicide Detective John Keegan gets his first case. Cassandra Lavelle, an up and coming artist, is found brutally murdered in her apartment in Kips Bay by the East River. The violence of the attack will stay with Keegan throughout his career. Times are different and so is Keegan, at the time a young detective with a positive outlook, a bright future ahead of him. The events of the case will change all of that.

Early signs point to the ex-boyfriend and Keegan starts to think the case looks too cookie-cutter. When a mystery man is revealed, Keegan puts his resources toward finding him, believing there's much more to the murder than meets the eye. He enlists the help of Marcus Lay, a uniform cop looking for a much-deserved promotion, to uncover the truth and find Cassie's killer.

The First Cut offers a glimpse at signature characters in the Keegan Mystery series, including future wife Pauline McCrory, friend Karl Lavin, and tech expert Jacob. They all make an appearance in this visit to the past and the novel lays the groundwork for who and what Keegan will become.

When his relationship with investigative reporter Elena Moreno turns sour, Keegan decides to immerse himself in his work and fulfill the promise he made to Cassie, to bring her justice. With his world shifting and his future dependent on every decision, Keegan will both succeed and fail and forever look back at this pivotal time in his life.
