Amazon review of The Darkness Deepens
I have read a number of books by this author and have never been disappointed. This is yet another great read.
On Christmas Eve Robert Stockton is killed in a car crash, caused by a drunken driver. He leaves a schoolteacher wife, Kathryn, and three children (by his first wife, Helen).
Ten days after Robert’s death a girl from Kathryn’s school, Annie Campbell, is lured to a violent death by a local weirdo. Not long after this, Kathryn’s three stepchildren disappear from home leaving a note to Kathryn, saying ‘We know what you did.’ She assumes they blame her for agreeing to have their father’s life support switched off. The police receive a letter from someone giving details of Annie Campbell’s murder that couldn’t possibly be known to anyone but her killer. The letter also says that the missing children are all dead, which makes the police believe that the childrens’ disappearance and Annie’s murder are linked― but is Kathryn somehow linked as well?
Kathryn refuses to believe the children are dead and is determined to find her late husband’s children. The police interpret the boy’s note as meaning Kathryn is the cause of their disappearance. They can’t prove anything but the suspicion remains and it hampers her search somewhat and it also means she’s pretty much on her own in tracking the children down. Evidence is sent to her which proves the abductor to be the same person who killed Annie Maguire and this person is telling them the children are all dead.
However, help arrives in the name of fellow schoolteacher, Harry McWilliams. The combined ingenuity of Kathryn and Harry puts them first on the trail of the killer of Annie and thence on to the trail of the children, but are the children alive? It’s a highly dangerous trail, as Kathryn finds out to her cost.
The trail involves another murder, a remote Scottish island and the twisted leader of a strange religious cult who is kept informed of their Kathryn’s every move. The story involves a lot of action, murder, a dramatic car chase, suspense, horror, humour and the blossoming love between Harry and Kathryn.
Genre: Mystery
