Alton Rhode is feeling a bit lonely - and depressed. Just about everyone he knows, including his girlfriend, is out of town. Then, a beautiful woman walks into the private eye's office.
It's not the first time Laurene Robillard has done that. The last time, she was a young hooker -- and part of a conspiracy that nearly got him killed. Now, reformed and respectable, she wants Rhode's help.
In fact, she asks him to find out who killed her grandfather. Never one to hold a grudge, Rhode soon finds himself in a Southern town that has more secrets than pigeons on Confederate statues. But with two brutish killers straight out of "Deliverance" on his tail, he is forced to call for backup.
The new ally, making his own contributions to a rising body count, helps Rhode uncover a murderous financial conspiracy.
