The television series Strictly Come Dancing has introduced millions of enthralled viewers to the delights of dancing, an activity for all celebrated by Lorn Macintyre in his new short story collection Miss Esther Scott's Fancy. A young woman from the Highlands finds herself performing the Highland Fling for a mystic on the continent; ghillies dance with royals at Balmoral Castle; romance is found in the reels at the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's annual Summer School at St Andrews, where the legendary Miss Jean Milligan presides; a girl inherits the hard shoes of a mysterious Irish dancing champion; white gloves, tails, dazzling gowns and tangos in the sumptuous ballrooms of Edinburgh and Glasgow; a young woman falls head over heels in swing dancing; a ceilidh dancer finds a sinister partner. Though some of these stories are about betrayal, tragedy and loss, the joy of dance is always present.
