CHAPTER ONE

Amanda walked down the hallway approaching the office mailroom when she heard her name mentioned. She froze in her tracks. It was Carlos' voice.

"Who? Amanda?" he asked.

Amanda heard another voice, of the new guy in the mailroom, Alex. "Yes. I thought you were into her."

Carlos laughed. "No, man! She's... you know...."

Amanda pressed against the wall, holding the invitations tightly in her hand. She always enjoyed coming to the mailroom herself, delivering the printed invitations from PR by hand. She could have left them with the secretary, but she was always happy to see Carlos.

She heard Alex whisper to Carlos, "You mean, you're not dating?"

Carlos shrugged. "Amanda is... she's, you know. She's not my type."

Amanda's face reddened. Not his type? That's not what he told her!

"Cool, man," Alex said. "I just thought, by the way you speak to her whenever she comes, that you're all into her."

"Hell no. Amanda...? She's...."

He must have gestured something with his hands, as Alex burst into laughter.

Amanda knew Carlos was talking about her weight.

"I feel bad for her," came Carlos' voice. He whispered, "You can look at it as charity."

Amanda's eyes widened. The son of a bitch!

Alex chuckled. "You're banging her for charity?"

Carlos smiled. "She's an okay Thursday night material."

Amanda couldn't listen to another word. Stunned, she walked away from the mailroom. Her eyes stinging, she quickly made her way past the secretaries, past HR, and into her cubicle. She fell in the chair, feeling it bow under her weight. Her mind raced. "Thursday night material?!"
