When Polly came back from her post-funeral holiday, she expected that everything would be back to normal. The shadows and dark places in her mind, which had been weakened by the Spanish sun, would continue to fade. Marcie's death in that explosion at the cottage would go the way of all wounds, Polly hoped. She wasn't going to escape remainders. She had no intentions of leaving the house that she and Marcie had shared, rambling and gloomy thought it might be. She was going to stick it out. That's what Marcie would have done. Nothing would drive Polly away, she told herself, not even the voice on the telephone that whispered strangely, obscenely, "This is Marcie speaking."
