When former private investigator Kate Reed hears that the once-famous rock band founded by four high school classmates is taking a second shot at stardom, she's as thrilled as everyone else in Crescent Creek. The group's plans include a nationwide comeback tour, a new CD and a splashy reunion concert for loyal fans in their Colorado hometown.

Unfortunately, the joyful celebration ends almost as quickly as it began when the quartet's drummer suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances. As the police launch an investigation, Crescent Creek buzzes again - with rumors of murder, jealousy and revenge.

Soon after hearing the tragic news, Kate is recruited by a local resident to look into the musician's death. The resulting inquiry encompasses a strange mix of clues: a turquoise ice climbing rope, a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle, a guitar linked to a legendary rock star, a bright red Golden Gate Bridge keychain and a baffling brown substance smeared on the sleeve of the victim's vintage Van Halen T-shirt.
