The annual essay contest sponsored by the Crescent Creek Gazette typically receives submissions about Colorado history, landmarks and legends. But the current competition has attracted something quite different—a murder confession as well as a threat by the killer to strike again.
Former private investigator Kate Reed is among the first to learn of the inexplicable entry. Her husband works for the Gazette, and the editor turns to Kate for advice about handling the ominous warning. At first, Kate’s suggestion to contact the police is rebuffed. But that changes when the editor’s former coworker is found dead and the crime scene mirrors one from thirty years in the past.
As police begin to investigate both homicides, they enlist Kate to interview witnesses and search for evidence.
