In 1851 seventeen-year-old Erica Curtis and her two older brothers visit the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. After seeing the illustrated trinket and tobacco boxes on display at the Crystal Palace, Erica is keen to make them instead of the clay pipes by which the family earns its living. The trinket boxes are a great success for Erica, but her young man makes it clear that he doesn't want her to carry on with the work she adores.
