A novel by

Young Mollie Paget, a servant girl in a grand but gloomy mansion called Beverley House, is to leave her old life behind, and move to London to help her Aunt Nell run a clothing shop, and embrace the burgeoning fashion world.

Shortly before she leaves for London, Mollie encounters a young French girl, Chantelle, who has mysteriously arrived from Paris. No one knows who she is or why she is there. Chantelle speaks little English but is well-dressed and seems to belong to the gentry. She also has an incredible story to tell...

Chantelle and Mollie immediately take to each other and Mollie decides to bring Chantelle with her to London. With her French accent and knowledge of French fashion, Chantelle would be a great asset as well as an intriguing friend. Ritchie, a childhood playmate and cousin of Mollie's is now in charge of the business. He is intrigued by Chantelle too. But does his heart really yearn for Mollie?
