The author first visited North Africa in 1930 and was in Nigeria & Ghana in 1957, but first came to Botswana in 1963, staying with the Bakgatla tribe, of which she later became a member, tribal - mother, and adviser. She has identified with her adopted people in a way that few Europeans have achieved or even attempted, without ceasing to be a Scot.
