Shoe Horn is the parentified and battered elder son of and exploitive alcoholic narcissist. He supports his father and his beloved younger brother who is "special" by working as an apprentice plumber in 1922 Barrow-in-Furness, a famous shipbuilding port on the west coast of England facing the Irish sea. Shoe suffers beatings and humiliation for the love of his sweet, innocent and preternaturally intuitive brother. He also struggles with his Adolescent sexuality and his desire to preserve an integrity his father and boss sorely lack. His journey, the support of his friends is to learn somehow to be his own man and to love himself and others well in a world of moral confusion.
