Walter Dean Myers was a writer of children's and young adult literature. He was born in West Virginia in 1937, but spent most of his childhood and young adulthood in Harlem. Suffering with a speech impediment, Myers cultivated a love of writing poetry and short stories and he acquired an early love of reading.
