No one ever expected much of Mal Cary, the second son of a Viscount, including himself. So, when he is the cause of a terrible accident that kills his older brother, and the responsibilities of his title are thrust upon him, he does what he’s always done–run. This time, he runs half a world away to the American Wild West of his childhood dreams.

Alice Tolbert has never known anything but responsibility. After her stepmother died, it was up to her to care for her sisters on their Texas ranch. After her father dies, not only do those responsibilities grow, but some people in town don’t think a young, un-married woman should be allowed to run a ranch on her own. Especially because she’s half Apache.

When Alice’s younger sister leaves for California with her husband’s family, her brother-in-law does one last kindness: he hires a gunslinger to protect the ranch. But Alice can’t abide the arrogant, brooding man, and he doesn’t seem to have much use for her, either.

But as their attraction grows, Mal must make a choice. Will he do the honorable thing, and leave the woman he has come to love behind?
