For over a week, Jubal seemed down and blue. He had been talking and thinking about his good friend and lawman mentor, Monty Peel, who was deceased. Finally, Nancy and Judge Brewster persuade him to take a few days away from Waco and visit Palestine, Texas. He finally warms up to the idea and agrees to go. After all, it had been a spell since he had paid his respects at Monty’s grave. He looked forward to walking the streets of Palestine where he first wore a lawman’s badge serving the town as Monty’s deputy for over two years.
However, if Stone had any idea that his going there would make him an eyewitness to a killing—a killing that would make one of Monty’s good friends and fellow lawmen, Les Crigger, a widower—he would not have gone.
Now Crigger and Stone will track the bank robbers and killers who rode roughshod over Palestine. Les Crigger aims to bed down the man who took his Cora from him. He won’t stop until he does.
