After hearing her friend Augusta's voice calling to her from the 19th century, Herleva Miller, a girl from the 13th century, follows her instinct and walks up the hill to the Ridgeway, in Wiltshire, trying to find out the cause of Augusta's upset.

Stepping over the stile, a contraption unknown in 1200, in the same way she began her adventure in book 1, Ripples on the Ridgeway, she finds herself back in 1800.

Augusta's home has been burgled and, though nothing has been stolen, it seems the perpetrators have been looking for something. Everything has been turned over and Augusta's beloved forte-piano has been damaged.

In addition to this calamity, it seems Mister Downton, Augusta's beau, has taken up with the beautiful but malicious Clara Fanshawe. Augusta has heard rumours that there is a romance between them and she simply does not know what to do.

Herleva and Augusta set out to discover the reasons for the break-in and when there are two more murders, find themselves challenged by a dangerous gang of thugs.

How can the girls uncover the reasons behind the murders and will Augusta win back the handsome Mister Downton?

Miller and Dodds-13th century meets the 19th century, are together again in this, the second Bycatch tale, The Paisley Pear.
