Betty Carter was appointed assistant chief nurse of Ward J - known as the gremlin ward as things never went smoothly in it - and ordered to clear up the trouble there. The ward's chief nurse, Linda MacDonnell, resented Betty because she thought a professional nurse should refuse to think of romance or anything outside her profession - and Betty would not admit either that Ward J was jinxed or that to be a good nurse one had to forget that one was a woman.
