During the events of Old World War, Sashi and Will Brighton have a close encounter with forces working against Colorado's cardinal vampire, Maven. To avoid becoming collateral damage, the couple take an impromptu trip to Las Vegas, where Sashi hopes to repair her relationship with their daughter, Grace, a newly minted healing witch.

The city's impressionable cardinal vampire, Silvio, has a new voice in his ear, a bloodthirsty new pastime, and an employee who knows exactly how to push Sashi's buttons: her estranged father, Sir Lucius Noring. Silvio has decided that the perfect opening act for his deadly new hobby is a contest of magic between father and daughter – and if Sashi refuses to participate, he'll use Grace instead.
