These eleven stories are titled by a short novel written in the late 1950s, Lone Hand, in which a gunfighter tries to live down his past. Another, Vengeance Station, deals with a devastating feud and its climax in a desert confrontation. Like all of Olsens fiction, these stories are character-driven: although his plots are among the best, it is his people that provide the richness, texture, and depth of emotion that grip his readers.
