Sixteen girls and thirteen boys boarded the scout ship for the trip to Tintera. It’s a rite of passage when they turn fourteen. They are dropped off on a nearby colonized planet picked up one month later. There is a certain amount of prestige in coming back alive from Survival. It's their key to adulthood.
