She finds a temporary refuge with a mysterious lady she meets on the road, before seeking shelter with an old friend in the village of Charmouth. Meanwhile Juliet’s cousin Susan risks travelling alone to Sussex to ask the assistance of the man to whom Juliet was betrothed in infancy.Charles Farringdon and Lord George Marshall travel to Dorset to help with the search for Miss Chalcombe. During the process of bringing Juliet home, they uncover a plot that threatens the safety of the whole Chalcombe family. But who is behind the plot, and how may he be brought to justice? The authorities only appear to be interested in suppressing social unrest, towards the end of the ‘year without a summer’, 1816. Against this background an apparently unlikely love match is made.
