One famous story, by a certain Mr. Edgar A. Poe, 19th-century Master of the Macabre, is unique in literature. For “The Cask of Amontillado” consists not of the usual beginning, middle, and ending, but only the story’s final events. The last act of a tale of long-suffered outrages, for which the injured, grudge-holding party finally takes revenge . . . in a very concrete manner..
