I wait on the platform for my commuter train, like any other day.
But this time is different. I catch sight of him in the rush hour crowds, the man who broke my sister’s heart. He’s wearing the scarf she bought him before she discovered he was married. Does he recognise me? Surely, he does. Everyone who knows my sister says we look alike.
I don’t know why I do it, but I confront him. I shout in front of the whole platform that he’s a cheater. Of course, he calls me crazy, says I would be shocked if I knew the truth. Pulling his arm, I try to make him listen. To see the hurt he caused. The train is approaching. In the tunnel, lights grow brighter. What happens next is a blur… as if I zone out for a few seconds. All I know is that when I look up, he’s gone.
I made a terrible mistake once before. My sister forgave me then. Have I just made another?
