Nothing Ever Happens in Clacton

(2018)
A novel by

Four characters cross paths in the bustling seaside town of Clacton: an elderly fortune teller, two sisters who hate each other, and a shy teenage lad on holiday with his parents. As their lives become entangled, ambition sees the youngsters seek their fortunes in London or California, but undesirables are never far away.
The fortune teller’s life is threatened by an unsavoury character from his past, and the youngsters step in to help. Action shifts between Manchester, the Isle of Wight and London, and spotlights the modelling world, seedy Soho, and the microworld inside an aristocrat’s Hampstead mansion.
We follow the four through the supposedly austere fifties, the swinging and not-so-swinging sixties, and the cult-ridden seventies. Can the two sisters be reconciled after one is snatched by a sect? Will the fortune teller survive threats to enjoy retirement? Could the bright young lad’s glittering career be tarnished by past deeds?
This tale combines the best elements of a thriller and a coming-of-age story. It starts and ends in Clacton during the two hottest summers of the twentieth century, but in between lies a roller-coaster ride that few will be able to resist.
