(2021)(A book in the Fergal O'Brien series)
An omnibus of novels by I J Parnham
Clementine – When Fergal O’Brien sells a bottle of his universal remedy to the dying Leland Crawford, Leland makes a miraculous recovery, for several minutes. Then he drops dead. But before the end Leland bequeaths to Fergal his beloved Clementine, a 250-foot sidewheeler that once ruled the Big Muddy, until it sank.
Worse, Leland was in debt and now the creditors expect Fergal to pay up. With Fergal having no money, minstrel Dayton Hyde offers him a way out, but only if he kills Marshal Swift. To avoid carrying out this unwelcome task, Fergal will need to use all his cunning or like as not in this wet weather, he’ll share the fate of Clementine.
Bunty the Bounty Hunter – Fergal O’Brien has suffered bad times before, but when he walks into the town of Paradise he is at his lowest ebb. Footsore and hungry, he doesn’t have a cent to his name.
Worse is to follow when Tex Porter raids Paradise’s bank and Fergal is the victim of mistaken identity, leading to the bartender Bunty Shelby suspecting he’s an outlaw. Bunty dreams of one day becoming the greatest bounty hunter in the West and capturing Fergal could make her dreams come true.
If Fergal is going to restore his fortunes, he’ll have to find a way to defeat the formidable Tex, while avoiding letting the somewhat less formidable Bunty claim her first bounty.
The Curse of the Phantom Pirate – Having finally become a wealthy man Fergal O’Brien no longer has to sell his universal remedy to cure all ills, but that leaves him with the problem of what he wants to do instead. An opportunity arises when he comes across a theater that has been abandoned after the untimely death of its owner Harold Beaumont.
Fergal sets out to bring his skills as a showman to a larger audience, but he soon faces plenty of problems. The theater has a poor reputation, it’s haunted by the ghost of a pirate and, worst of all, the gunslinger Laramie Todd wants a regular pay-off or he’ll burn the place to the ground.
As the theater has never made a profit, to succeed in his new venture Fergal must work out how Harold ever managed to pay Laramie in the first place, a mystery that can only be solved by confronting the curse of a long-buried pirate.
