THE NIGHTHAWK'S BATCHELOR For Sam Caldwell horsestealing was a means to an end and he worked at it as though it were a legitimate business, until success brought danger. Sam and his partners narrowly escaped capture, and in their flight afterwards they discovered that it was not just one lawman who was on their trail, it was a posse of hard- riding manhunters. They rode their horses down and the posse did not relent. They stole fresh horses and still the manhunters were back there. Finally, they rode into an isolated ranch, got caught up in another variety of outlawry, and that time they came to the end of the trail. But fate spared Sam in a unique manner; he was the only one fate did spare, though.
