Old buffalo hunter Sam Sloan sets off on a quest for a spirit vision and final resting place. Many-Horses, an ancient Navajo, is near starvation when he encounters Sam. Then an old Lakota woman, White Magpie, comes accompanied by young Yellow Bluebell, having escaped from Crow captivity. United in their search for survival, they form a magic circle. But a white bird foretells of disaster just before Sam discovers gold in a nearby creek. An accidental conversion of spirits has created a special bond. The Mexicans have a word for it . . . companero. It means better than a friend. And though old and battered, these companeros will stand by each other despite the odds . . .
