The Chief Inspector's Statement
(1951)(The Pennycross Murders)
(A book in the Philip Hunter series)A novel by Maurice Procter
When Constable Woodman stumbled over the dead and mutilated body of little Jessie Baker in Cuckoo Wood he reflected grimly that the fear that had lain over the small West Riding village of Pennycross for the past eight months, since that other terrible child murder, had been fully justified. Called in by the Yorkshire police, Chief Inspector Hunter of Scotland Yard found two very obvious suspects but a lack of definite evidence to implicate either. So he concocted a plan, hoping the murderer would reveal himself.
